Call her Maria.

Her story — told in the bright living room of a low-rent Madison apartment decorated with a shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe — comes out in fragments, punctuated by bitter laughter and tears. The tale is confused by Maria’s shaky grasp of the U.S. legal system, and complicated by the need for an interpreter to bridge the gap between Spanish and English.
